George Finley Yoga bio.
George began his yoga studies in 1969 as part of his physical training as a stage actor. In the 1970’s he deepened his practice with meditation in the Ananda Marga Yoga Society. In the 1980s he practiced kundalini yoga at the 3HO (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) founded by Yogi Bhajan in Los Angeles. In the 1990s his practice intensified at the Center for Yoga on Larchmont Av. in Los Angeles.
More recently, George became a certified Prime of Life Yoga instructor studying with Dr. Larry Payne at the Samata International Yoga Studio. Prime of Life Yoga is intended and designed for people in mid-life and beyond.
Dr. Larry Payne is the founding president of the International Association of Yoga therapists. He is also cofounder of the yoga curriculum at the UCLA School of Medicine, and the founding director of the Yoga therapy programs at Loyola Marymount University.
George has been teaching gentle yoga classes continuously since 1996. His teaching style is in the lineage of Krishnamacharya and his son Desikachar.
One of the major benefits of yoga is stress reduction. And realizing that 90% of people’s visits to primary care physicians are due to causes rooted in stress, George has designed a gentle class to specifically elicit the “relaxation response” as characterized by Dr. Herbert Benson. The idea being, of course, to offer a program of preventative medicine.
